CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

There are some American traditions that go together like mashed potatoes and gravy -- football and Thanksgiving morning -- commonly called The Turkey Bowl.

The Flanagan Family from Western Springs joined by friends and neighbors gather at the local park under the watchful, seasoned eye of dear old dad who referees the match.

For many years now, they've put it all on the line for bragging rights for this seriously fun affair.

"This will be our 4th annual. It was Sarah's idea…Turkey Bowl," said Terry Flanagan.

For the kids, even those who don't like football, what's not to like today. There's cheering, beverages, and donuts brought by neighbor Lori Hunter.

"I provide the hot cocoa. I think I've perfected it over the years," Hunter says.

The winning team gets awarded a plaque but really when that whistle blows and the day is over, there's really only one goal in mind - don't get hurt.

"We have had some injuries over the years," said. Sarah Flanagan.

So lace'em up and look out. It's go time or perhaps kinda go time!
