Power Connection provides for families in need in Bolingbrook

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The holiday season is the season for giving. But a Bolingbrook non-profit organization called Power Connection believes in giving all year long.

Power Connection is a faith-based community organization that was created to "empower people for life." The founder, Pastor Jerry Basel started this labor of love 10 years ago, to help all families in need.

Before Power Connection, Basel grew frustrated with having to turn people away because they made - just above - the government minimum. His non-profit only requires those who come to them for help to provide a valid Illinois I.D.

"This is, what is, the heart and soul of Power Connection," Basel said. "We want to be able to help the community in whatever way we can."

"One of the things I was impacted with was the fact that you don't have to tell them how much money you make," one woman told FOX 32 News. "It's for everybody."

Power Connection asks for a $10 donation to keep their organization running.

"We have to pay rent," Basel said. "To keep the building going, we have to have some kind of income because we receive no federal or state government funding. Anything from here, from here can go into their grocery bags."

From bread to produce, Power Connection offers what they can to families and individuals that need a little extra support.

"They can stuff this bag as full as they can," Basel said. "As they are getting ready to leave our place, we have other items that have been donated - maybe bulk items. Things that we need to get rid of pretty quickly, because like the bananas are getting really ripe. I want to make sure we give it to the people before we give it to the petting zoos."

The mission of Power Connection is to empower people for life. The non-profit focuses on three areas: Job skills training, education training and resources for living.

"It has helped my husband and me a great deal," Karen told FOX 32 News. "He got laid off a couple of years ago. Without the Power Connection, we would not have made it."

The true beauty of this organization is that it isn't just a food pantry. The training includes forklift certification classes, computer classes, resume writing, interview skills and more.

Power Connection also works with the local school district to feed and clothe kids in need. They recently helped 270 homeless students in the area, as the weather turned cold.

The organization's 10th annual dinner auction takes place Jan. 24 at the Bolingbrook Golf Club. If you're interested in helping out, stop by!

People are hungry all year long - not just during the holidays – and Power Connection wants to be able to assist them whenever they need a helping hand.
