MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

After two sexual assault reports and a string of robberies near campus, many University of Minnesota students admit they're concerned about safety. Now, they're calling for more police through a petition.

"It seems like every single time we open our e-mail, we have a crime alert," Sara Gottlieb said.

Gottlieb created an online petition to put more cops on campus before the weekend's armed robbery and sex assault reports. Now, she's hoping increased awareness will translate to more signatures and ultimately, more police in the area

"We've got a lot of people signing up," she said, noting that 3,200 people have already put down their names.

While she acknowledges that even something as simple as adding street lights can be mired in bureaucratic red tape, she says the petition is more of a rallying cry for the university to do something to address the safety concerns.

"We're having to take a lot more extreme measures in order to get from place to place at night," Gottlieb said. "Even walking a couple of blocks doesn't seem safe."

So far this semester, the U of M has issued a dozen crime alerts. Only 3 were actually related to crimes on campus, but that's a distinction most students don't make.

"Everyone knows what's going on, but we haven't really had one place for everyone to collect their thoughts, for everyone to write comments," Gottlieb explained.

Breaking down the numbers, there has been a steady increase in the number of crime alerts, with seven in November and two on Sunday alone.

Some students contend that the recent increase in crime is interfering with their ability to get an education.

"We were at the library, but we had to get a ride home," Gottlieb said.
