AG Lisa Madigan releases Safe Shopping Guide

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The Illinois attorney general is asking us to keep safety in mind during holiday shopping.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan just released her annual Safe Shopping Guide. It highlights toys and households products that have been recalled in the last year and can be dangerous to kids. She's asking parents and caregivers to be vigilant.

The 2013 edition of the guide features photos and descriptions of nearly 100 children's products recalled in the last year. The dangerous items include choking hazards, and things made with hazardous chemicals.

Stores are supposed to stop selling items that are recalled, but Madigan says they often end up still for sale on popular websites like Amazon, E-bay, and Craigslist.

An informal survey of past shopping guides, in publication since 2007, turned up several items for resale which had previously been recalled. They include the Fisher-Price Play 'n' Go Campsite figures - posing a choking hazard to young children - and McDonald's "Shrek"-themed glasses with dangerous levels of a toxic chemical.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
