The chief of the Southfield fire department says 24 families are displaced after a kitchen fire spread at the Providence Tower Apartments on Nine Mile Road.

Chief Keith Rowley says the fire started shortly after 1 a.m. on Sunday. It began on a stovetop on the seventh floor of the building.

He says firefighters had a hard time putting out the fire due to water failure in the complex's old piping system. He adds the building did not have a centralized alarm, notification system or sprinkler system because those items weren't required, or weren't required by safety code, when the building was built.

Rowley says the lack of notification and water failure did not lead to the high number of displacements; the extremely high heat of the fire did.

The Red Cross has provided aid in getting shelter for some of the families. Others went to stay with relatives.

The chief reminds everyone to watch the food you are cooking and do not leave it unattended, and to change your smoke alarm batteries twice a year.
