Debate over flag displayed over Atlanta highway continues

ATLANTA -

The debate over a flag display overlooking a major highway in downtown Atlanta continues.

Members of the American Legion Post 233 have been petitioning the city for two years to change the display overlooking International Boulevard. The flag is painted vertically with the union in the upper right corner, which the veterans said is an improper way to display the flag.

City leaders, including Public Works Commissioner Richard Mendoza and members of Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed's staff, met with the American Legion members on Monday. City officials have denied that there is a problem with the way the flag is depicted on the sign.

Mendoza said that at Monday's meeting, the two sides agreed to disagree.

The flag fight will continue Tuesday morning with an Atlanta City Council committee meeting. Atlanta City Councilmember Felicia Moore has drafted a measure that could pave the way for a change of the display.
