BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. (WJBK) -

The president of Temple Beth El in Bloomfield Hills says the emotion of the synagogue has been "sadness" after accepting the resignation of Keren Alpert, a woman who faked the credentials needed to become and then serve as a rabbi.

Raymond Rosenfeld says Alpert served the congregation for many years as, first, as education director. She was ordained as a rabbi after leading staff members to believe she applied for, was accepted to, and completed the training necessary to hold that title. Rosenfeld says the staff took her word for it and didn't ask for documentation.

"The reality is, is that there was an incredibly high level of trust in her. Trust is the central element of every religious institution's relationship to their clergy," he told Fox 2's Robin Schwartz.

He adds any religious ceremony Alpert presided over is still legal and valid, according to the temple.

Fox 2 tried to reach Alpert for comment. A family member told us she had nothing to say.

Rosenfeld says, however, she did apologize in her resignation letter, saying "I hope that in time you can forgive my very poor judgement." The temple does not have plans to take further action against her. A new rabbi will join the temple in March and a search is underway for an assistant rabbi.
