ST. CHARLES, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A one-time substance abuse counselor who worked at the west suburban Illinois Youth Center pleaded not guilty Thursday to having sex with a juvenile detainee, the Beacon-News is reporting.

Alexa Rubin, 25, of Aurora, denied the charges during a brief arraignment before Kane County Judge Susan Clancy Boles.

She was arrested in late September following an investigation by the Illinois Department of Corrections and a Kane County grand jury indictment.

If convicted of the four felony counts of custodial sexual misconduct, she faces up to five years in prison.

Prosecutors said Rubin had sex with, and performed a sex act on, the boy on Feb. 14. They also had sex in April and she performed a sex act on him last year.

The state Department of Juvenile Justice said Rubin resigned in June after spending about two-and-a-half years working at IYC-St. Charles. She was a contractor affiliated with a Downstate non-profit that provides drug and alcohol treatment.

Rubin's attorney, Kathleen Colton, requested a status hearing in late January, and Boles set that hearing for Jan. 23.
