NFL concussion suit moving to federal court

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A concussion lawsuit filed by a former Chicago Bears quarterback against the NFL and Rosemont-based helmet maker Riddell is moving to federal court.

Bobby Douglass, 66, says in the lawsuit he played through concussions during his 91-game NFL career because he and other players were not told it could cause long-term brain damage.

Northwestern University graduate John J. Cornell is also a plaintiff in the suit, which was originally filed in Cook County Circuit Court on Nov. 4.

Cornell, also 66, lives in Chicago and participated in two NFL training camps for the New Orleans Saints in 1969 and 1970, the suit says.

Both men claim they suffered multiple concussive and sub-concussive brain injuries, some of which went undocumented, according to the suit.

The NFL filed a notice of removal in federal court in Chicago on Wednesday to put the case in federal jurisdiction, as the suit claims violations of federal labor laws.
