Police: Man, 62, thrown from balcony after robbery

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Chicago police are looking for the robber who threw a 62-year-old man off a balcony in the Gresham neighborhood late Tuesday, leaving him in critical condition after a three-story fall.

Community activist Andrew Holmes urged neighbors in the 7700 block of South Halsted Street to call police if they have any information about the attack — and he urged the robber to turn himself in.

"It's unjustified," Holmes told the Chicago Sun-Times. "(The victim)'s still somebody's grandfather. Maybe still somebody's father. He's still human."

Chicago police said the robbery was reported about 10:45 p.m. Anthony Edwards, one of the building's residents, said the attack took place in a secluded stairwell in the rear, gated area of the building.

The suspect robbed a 28-year-old man of a purse, police said, before running up the rear stairs. Soon after the robbery, they said, the 62-year-old man fell three stories to the ground.

Edwards said he saw the robber — who he said weighed "at least" 300 pounds — wrestle with the 62-year-old man before throwing him off the porch.

"When they got through tussling and turning," Edwards said, "the big dude picked him up and just threw him over the banister. And he ran."

The 62-year-old man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition with a fractured skull, police said. The stolen purse was recovered at the scene.

"To the person that did this crime, you know, you need to turn yourself in," Holmes said. "You can't live with it on your conscience because, sooner or later, you never know which surveillance camera you may have run into."
