DePaul beats Milwuakee 80-71

MILWAUKEE – ClevelandMelvin and Brandon Young combined for 39 points to lead DePaul to an 80-71 winat Milwaukee on Tuesday. Melvin scored 20 and grabbed nine rebounds while Youngadded 19 with seven boards and six assists in the non-conference victory.

DePaul (3-1) opened up ahalftime tie with five quick points from the senior duo. Young started thescoring with a layup off an assist from Billy Garret Jr. before Melvin knockeddown one of his four three-pointers from the wing off an assist from Young.

Melvin's fourth andfinal three of the evening pushed the DePaul advantage to double-figures at59-49 with just under nine minutes left on the clock. The Blue Demons tooktheir largest lead of the game on a baseline dunk by Charles McKinney for a14-point advantage with 7:26 left in the game.

Milwaukee (4-2)attempted to cut the deficit late in the game and pulled to within six pointson four occasions over the final two minutes. DePaul held the lead with freethrows from Jamee Crocket and Durrell McDonald and a spectacular follow-up dunkby McKinney off a missed jumper.

Crockett finished thenight with 10 points off the bench for the Blue Demons while Garrett had nineand McDonald finished with eight points. Overall, the DePaul bench outscoredMilwaukee's reserves by a 29-22 margin. 

Melvin just missed hissecond straight double-double with 20 points and nine rebounds and he alsoblocked three shots. He continued his strong start to the season from longrange by going 4-of-6 from three-point land. For the season, the senior is12-of-18 (.667) from behind the arc.

Matt Tiby led Milwaukeewith 20 points and 11 rebounds while Kyle Kelm scored 16 points off the bench.

Up next for the BlueDemons is a trip to Kansas City for two games in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic.DePaul takes on No. 14/16 Wichita State at the Spring Center on Monday, Nov.25.

Notes: Cleveland Melvinhas 12 three-pointers through four games this season... he totaled 15 duringhis junior season and 16 as a sophomore... under Oliver Purnell, DePaul is now18-3 (3-0 this season) when scoring 80 or more points... Melvin finished thegame in a tie for eighth on DePaul's all-time scoring list... he has 1,534points and is tied with Terry Davis (1989-93)... Melvin also passed Davis forfifth on the field goals list and he surpassed the 600-rebound plateau... theBlue Demons are now 12-1 all-time against Milwaukee and 69-19 against thecurrent lineup of Horizon League programs... the game was No. 2,900 in programhistory dating back to the start of the 1923-24 season.
