Highland Park mayor making "promised appearance" when shot at nightclub

A statement released from the Highland Park mayor's office says DeAndre Windom was "making a promised appearance" at the Key Club when he was the victim of a shooting early Sunday morning.

The statement reports the "bullet pierced his upper thigh." Mayor Windom was taken immediately to the hospital, was treated and released later on Sunday. He is at home recovering.

The shooting happened before 2 a.m. on the 1400 block of Franklin. Police believe the shooting was the result of a dispute that did not involve the mayor, and therefore the mayor is believed to have not been the intended target.

Mayor DeAndre Windom Makes a Statement Regarding Shooting

Highland Park, Mi, 11/18/2013:
At approximately 2 AM on Sunday, November 17, 2013, Highland Park Mayor DeAndre Windom was a victim of a random shooting while making a promised appearance at 1440 Franklin St. in Downtown Detroit. Mayor Windom realized he was wounded upon exiting the venue. The bullet pierced his upper thigh. Mayor Windom was immediately taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital where he was treated and released later Sunday. The Detroit Police Department has launched an investigation. According to the police, Mayor Windom was not an intended target. There was no altercation with the Mayor or his security detail.

The Mayor is at home resting with his wife and family by his side. Fortunately, the Mayor was not seriously injured; however, this act of violence can happen to any family member. "This senseless act of violence serves as a need for peace in our communities. We must come together for change," says Mayor WIndom.

Mayor Windom and his family would also like to extend their thanks and appreciation to his many supporters through this trying time.
