ORONO, Minn. (KMSP) -

A beloved father, husband and doctor was found shot to death inside his Orono home on Friday night, and 48 hours later, Fox 9 News has learned new details about the man police shot and killed outside the home.

The community is still struggling to come to terms with Dr. Stephen Larson's shocking murder, but investigators aren't releasing any details about what led up to the shooting.

The identity of the man who was shot and killed by police in Larson's front yard is now known. Police responding to a call at Larson's home encountered 30-year-old Ted Hoffstrom. Shots were fired, and Hoffstrom was pronounced dead at the scene.

From his patients to the coworkers at his medical practice, Larson was regarded as an exceptional physician. Those who knew him were filled with sadness and confusion when they learned of his death. His partner described the news as "unimaginable."

"It's not unexpected, from time to time, to hear that someone died," Dr. Tony Shibley said. "It's very unusual to hear that someone was murdered."

After the shooting involving Hoffstrom, police entered the Larson home and found his body. According to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner, the 74-year-old died of multiple gunshot wounds.

"Obviously at his age, he could have retired long ago, but chose to continue to practice and was really contributing and giving back," Shibley said. "It's a big loss for us."

According to state records, Hoffstrom is an attorney who attended the University of St. Thomas law school, but it's unclear what his connection may have been to the prominent doctor at OBGYN Specialists.

"He donated his time freely and has delivered many, many -- thousands -- of babies and taken care of tens and tens of thousands of women," Shibley said. "It's just really hard to come by someone who didn't really respect and actually like him -- and he had a great sense of humor that really came out once you got to know him as well."

At Hoffstrom's home in St. Anthony, all someone would say is that "the family is going through hell right now."

Neighbors said they were "shocked" and speechless at the news, but police still wont' confirm that Hoffstrom is the suspected shooter in the slaying.

"It's just a shock to everyone," Shibley said. "We're just at a loss for words."

When Fox 9 News stopped by Larson's Burnsville practice on Sunday afternoon, a staff meeting was taking place; however, employees did not want to discuss the shooting.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office plans to hold a media briefing at 2 p.m. on the shooting.
