Fire damages Five Star Market in Sumpter Twp.

SUMPTER TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -

Firefighters from several agencies converged on Five Star market in Sumpter Twp. Sunday night. They say the high winds and heavy rain actually helped them fight the fire.

The fire started in the front of the building around 6:15pm. A bakery and hair salon near the market were spared, but a nearby pizza shop suffered water damage. Strong wind could have made the situation worse but fire officials say it did just the opposite.

"In this sense, believe it or not, the weather did us a favor," said Sumpter Township fire chief Rick Brown.  "With the wind direction by pushing the fire back out of the building from the point of the origin inside it caused a lot less damage than there really would have been."

The storm knocked out power in many places including western Wayne County. At the peak of the outages, 8,000 customers in Canton and Belleville were in the dark. As of 11pm Sunday, DTE Energy says 200,000 customers are without power.

It's not clear whether the severe weather caused the Sumpter Township fire but the chief is not ruling it out.

"With the lightning in the area and high winds it could've been," he says.

Thankfully no injuries are reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation and we're told the market will reopen soon.
