Poll: Cobb voters support Braves move-- but not spending tax dollars

Posted: Updated:

Cobb County residents are talking about the Braves' big move, and according to a new Insider Advantage-FOX 5 poll, more than half of them are happy about it.  But those same residents say they don't want to spend tax dollars on the new stadium.

The poll, which surveyed 1,698 registered voters in Cobb County, was conducted Monday night.  The results indicate that 59 percent of registered voters say they favor building a new stadium for the Braves near the intersection of Interstate 75 and Interstate 285.   HOwever, the percentage of voters who support using Cobb County tax dollars to build the new stadium drops to only 30 percent, with 56 percent opposed and 14 percent undecided.

"This is probably good news for the Braves if the decision moves very swiftly thru the political process, but likely spells potentially bad news for elected officials down the road, particularly if county funds are necessary for the stadium," said Insider Advantage's Matt Towery, who polled the last two successful SPLOSTS to pass in Cobb County for the official organizations supporting those SPLOSTs.

Another issue that could prove to be a problem for officials is traffic.  Over 80 percent of those polled said the proposed stadium's location would negatively or somewhat negatively impact traffic.

"They need to pass this thing very quickly before these numbers start to decline," said Towery.  "My guess is that if the Cobb Commission moves as quickly as they appear to be moving and avoid public input, the agreement will pass."

"The problem is that this is the opposite of the way Cobb normally operates, and it appears that if voters come to see this as a taxpayer-supported venture or start to focus on the increased commute or heavy traffic that might be created during games, the support for the elected officials will disappear quickly," Towery added.
