No injuries as fire collapses roof of Lake Forest mansion

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (Sun-Times media Wire) -

Fire officials said it's too soon to know what caused a huge blaze that collapsed the roof of a large north suburban home just after midnight on Monday, Pioneer Press is reporting.

Investigators remained at the home on the 11000 block of Keswick Lane in Lake Forest Monday morning seeking clues and damage estimates at the home, reportedly worth about $2 million.

Lake Forest Fire Battalion Chief Mike Gallo said the occupants escaped the home safely, and no firefighters were injured battling the flames.

"When I arrived the roof was fully involved and fire had dropped into the second floor," he said. "I'd say within 15 minutes the roof was beginning to sag and was destroyed.

"We had to go with an exterior attack," Gallo added. "It was tough because we couldn't put anyone in the building. It was too unstable. So we were trying to attack with exterior hose lines; there's no sense in putting anybody in a fire to try and save a house."

The blaze was under control within about 45 minutes, officials said, and roughly a dozen fire departments assisted Lake Forest, including Lake Bluff, Knollwood, Highland Park and Libertyville.
