CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Chicago police have determined that a Texas man's claim he was shot while riding in a vehicle in the Streeterville neighborhood Saturday night is false.

The 48-year-old contractor initially told police he heard shots and the rear window of his vehicle shattered in the 100 block of East Superior Street about 11 p.m., police said at the time of the shooting.

However, by Sunday evening police concluded that the man was not shot on the Magnificent Mile or anywhere else in the 18th District, which covers the River North and parts of Lincoln Park neighborhoods.

Police previously said they had not been able to find spent shell casings or broken glass -- telltale signs of a crime scene. Additionally, there were no reports of gunfire or a window shattering from people in the area during prime bar-time hours, police said.

The shooting is believed to be narcotics-related, police said Sunday evening.

After he was shot, the man drove to the Residence Inn hotel in the 200 block of East Walton, a few blocks away from the scene of the shooting, checked his vehicle in with a parking valet and went to his room, the man told investigators, according to police.

It was only once he got to his room that he realized he had been shot in the back, he told investigators.

The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in "stable" condition, police said.

No one was in custody as Area Central detectives investigated.
