DeKalb Co. resident frustrated with faulty water meters

Posted: Updated:
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

A DeKalb County woman said she's fed up with the water department. Jeanette Verduin said that her water meter was still leaking even after being replaced twice.

Verduin, a longtime member of the U.S Coast Guard, moved to this Pine Lake bungalow early this year. She never paid attention to the water meter in her front yard, until the summer, when her bill skyrocketed from the usual $20 to $180.

Verduin said DeKalb County Watershed looked at the numbers and told her the bill was correct.

"You feel aggravated, you feel frustrated. So in order to make it go away, you just kind of shrug your shoulders and swallow your pride and pay," said Verduin.

Her following two bills were back to normal.

"So I waited for my next bill. It came, it was $223, I believe," Verduin said.

Verduin says she complained a second time; DeKalb water officials told her the meter was broken and they would replace it.

But this month, her bill was back up to more than $100.

"I got fed up. It's like, you know what, I'm not going to take it anymore. I want to do something," she said.

After she called FOX 5 and emailed county commissioners, the county installed a third meter.

"I opened up the box and said, 'Hey, there's a brand new meter.' But you know what? It's underwater," Verduin said.

Much of her front yard was also submerged. Pictures she took showed water shot out of her yard like a sprinkler all of Thursday night.

"At this point it's almost comical. I felt like I was in a cartoon or something. Like what else can go wrong," Verduin said.

On Friday, Verduin said county workers fixed the meter and the water line feeding it from the street. It appears to have done the trick – so far.

DeKalb County Watershed officials did not respond to FOX 5's request for comment on the matter.
