CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man who apparently drove into Lake Michigan near Balbo Drive died after emergency crews rescued him from the submerged vehicle Thursday night.

Steven Halperin, 64, of the 800 block of South Plymouth Court, was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital at 11:07 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Crews were called to the scene where the vehicle went into the lake about 10:24 p.m., Fire Media Affairs Chief Larry Langford said. Witnesses told authorities the driver was heading southbound on Lake Shore Drive. The motorist apparently waited for traffic to clear, made a sharp turn and sped into the lake, Langford said.

A Chicago Fire Department water response team, including a helicopter and divers, found the submerged vehicle after spotting air bubbles in the lake, Langford said.

A team of three divers had to break the window of the locked vehicle, possibly an SUV or a station wagon, to remove the man, he said.

An autopsy Saturday was inconclusive pending further studies, according to the medical examiner's office.

No one else was in the vehicle.
