Growing Trend: Churches Holding Service At Bars

Posted: Updated:

It's a growing trend among churches across the country. They're turning to alcohol to attract young people!

Some churches have decided to serve beer at their events, while other congregations are taking holy discussions straight to the bar.

NPR examined the new trend.

For example, in Fort Worth, Texas, one church gets people in "the spirit" by holding communion at the bar. Every Sunday evening, 30 to 40 people gather at a brewpub and have church. A parish in Portland, Oregon has an event called "Beer And Hymns" once a month. They say that about one hundred younger people show up. The church does have a two beer maximum to make sure that alcohol doesn't cloud the message of the gospel.

Boston also has a church that meets at a bar. Most of the people who seem to attend these communions are refugees from traditional churches.
