Donations for cancer patient stolen from Athens store

ATHENS, Ga. -

A container collecting donations for a cancer patient was stolen from an Athens convenience store.

Surveillance video shows four young men approach the counter at Amna Food Mart on Jefferson Road. One of them then picks up the container holding donations for a cancer patient.

The managers said the thieves made off without $200 in the Sunday theft.

Store managers Fred Syed and Sherry Rodriguez quickly put together another donation box to collect funds for Chris Chandler. Diane Chandler had asked the store help collect donations to pay for her husband's medical needs.

"I can't comprehend someone stealing for someone who really needs the money for medical assistance," said Diane Chandler.

Anyone with information on the thieves is asked to contact the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.
