Marc, Young Lung Cancer Survivor, On Good Day

Posted: Updated:

Tomorrow is the start of Lung Cancer Awareness Month. For many of us, when we think about lung cancer, we automatically picture smokers.

However, that's not always the case. Sometimes, the disease hits a young man from Roxborough who never smoked a day in his life.

Marc came on Good day this morning to share his story and how you can join in his fight.

Marc Kuchler, his fiancée Rachael Kling and his doctor, Dr. Tracey Evans all talked to FOX 29.

"One night I was waking up with cold sweats," Kuchler told Mike and Sheinelle. "Went to the hospital, did tests, couldn't find out what it was. They ended up doing an x-ray of my chest, found a small spot. Then they actually were going to send me home because the people in the ER couldn't see it, it was so small."

He eventually got a second look and the radiologist told him to get a CAT scan.

"It is rather unusual that it happens to somebody so young. The average age for lung cancer is 70. Less than 2% are diagnosed in people like Mark, under the age of 45," said Dr. Evans.

"It has been stressful. At the time we weren't engaged so there were a lot of moments where Marc would say, ‘if you want to walk away, you can walk away now and I understand.' My whole thing was, this was plan. We were going to get married. I am not walking away. We will get through this," Kling told Mike and Sheinelle.
