'Fitbit' technology brings new motivation to walking

A Beautmont doctor proves you can lose weight just by walking, but, he got some help from new technology: the Fitbit bracelet.

A rubber bracelet called the Fitbit makes walking more interesting and more interactive.

Dr. Matthew Sims has lost 55 pounds since June. How did he lose the weight?

"I don't have to go running; I don't have to go doing 20 mile bicycle rides; I just walk," he explains.

And Sims sure walks a lot. He walks more than 10 miles a day, one step at a time. He says he's motivated by the Fitbit, one of the last est wearable fitness trackers on the market.

The bracelet syncs to the app on his phone or computer via Bluetooth and tells him if he's on track to meet his goal, and he can see what his Fitbit friends are up to.

"You can see your ups and downs. You can see it compared to other people. It shows you your burned calories. Depending on the model it can show you stairs; you can track your sleep," Sims says.

Even though the new generation of fitness trackers take pedometers to a whole new level, at the end of the day, you still have to put in the legwork. So how does a busy doctor have time to walk 25 thousand steps a day? He doesn't sit still.

"When I'm at home, if I'm watching TV, I'm not sitting on the couch; I'm walking."

The minimum number of steps that we should all be walking daily is ten thousand.
