911 call released in death of Paulding County boy

PAULDING COUNTY, Ga. -

Newly-released 911 calls shed some light on the death of a Paulding County boy.

Investigators said that 12-year-old Eric Forbes died from battered child syndrome earlier on Oct. 11. His father, 32-year-old Shayaa Forbes is charged with child cruelty and murder in the death.

Shayaa Forbes initially told 911 dispatchers that he found his son unresponsive in the bathtub at their Acworth home.

"He was a little bit underwater. His head was like bobbing," Forbes told the dispatcher.

During a court hearing on Tuesday, investigators said that Forbes admitted he spanked his sixth-grade son for about 45 minute after Eric brought home bad grades on his progress report. Sgt. Kevin Morgan said that the 12-year-old had swelling, bruises, cuts and other markings consistent with a prolonged beating. He even had bite marks on different parts of his body, Morgan said.

Morgan also said that several teachers had reported that Eric had physical signs of abuse. He said Division of Family and Children Services had "screened out one case" and found two other cases were "unfounded."

Citing the ongoing investigation into the boy's murder, DFCS would not comment on the case. They did note that a case is screened out if there is no indication of maltreatment or abuse after information is collected by one of their case workers.  They said an unfounded case means that information gathered did not support allegations of abuse or neglect.

Sources tell FOX 5 that a number of teachers from Frey Elementary School in Cobb County filed reports about bruises, black eyes and other physical signs of abuse when Eric was in third, fourth and 5th grade. Sources said that teachers filed three separate reports about abuse within the first few months of fifth grade.

Eric Forbes was enrolled in McClure Middle School in Paulding County when he died.

Shayaa Forbes is being held at the Paulding County Jail waiting for someone to post his $30,000 bond.
