For Lyn: Lisa Rayam reflects on the life of a friend

Breast Cancer Awareness month is never really over.  The Susan G. Komen Foundation says every three minutes "that" cancer knocks on a woman's door looking for a fight. October's 31 days are simply set aside for extra reflection; a time to really get a grasp on how this disease changes lives.

I am not a victim.  But, I have known many.

No matter what the stage-- 0 thru 4-- or where the walk, breast cancer sits propped in the center of the boxing ring for all to see.

Today, I write in honor of a dear friend.  Beautiful Lyn Walker now lives on in my heart and the hearts of so many others...

Lyn received the first diagnosis more than five years ago. Surgery, chemo and all the machinations of breast cancer followed.

Courageous and undaunted, she trained for the fight and magnanimously gave it the famous Ali knockout punch and won.  What a reprieve it must have been to smile and float through life so freely again.

Then, a few short years later, the bells in the ring tolled again.  This time the cancer attacked her entire body.

Fearless and even more determined, Lyn pulled out her now dusty gloves, ready to do battle again.  She smiled, laughed and loved through the process: the dodging, the ducking and shuffling of treatment and pain.

But on October 24 at 10:30 p.m., the referee called the fight. Heaven welcomed its newest angel while cancer, exhausted and out of breath, clung to the ropes on the left side of the ring. There was no cheering.

Cancer didn't win.  It only thought it had.

After that emotional and arduous 10-count that marks the end, Lyn's fighting spirit immediately filled the air.

The spotlight still on the ring, and her worn and weathered pair of gloves left behind... waiting to be picked up by another champ.
