State closing youth detention center in Paulding County

PAULDING COUNTY, Ga. -

The state is shutting down its juvenile detention facility in Dallas, Ga., six months after a scathing report from the U.S. Department of Juvenile Justice.

The State Department of Juvenile Justice is closing the facility after its contract with a private corrections company expires on Dec. 31. The Paulding Regional Youth Detention Center is a 100-bed facility, but less than half of those beds are being used.

Spokesman Jim Shuler said the closing has nothing to do with the detention center topping a U.S. Justice Department list of facilities with the highest claims of sexual contact between teens and staff.

"The best decision as a good steward of the taxpayers money at this junction was to, in fact, let the contract expire, and it will result in a $3 million savings this year and $6 million next year," said Shuler.

Shuler says the money saved will be used for programs and services for the state's youth as part of the upcoming Juvenile Justice Reform Act.

The juveniles at the Paulding facility will be taken to centers in Atlanta as well as Clayton and Sumter counties.
