24 families displaced in Lombard apartment fire

LOMBARD, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

24 families were displaced after an apartment fire early Saturday in west suburban Lombard.

Firefighters were called to a structure fire at 1:53 a.m. at the Willow Lakes apartments at Lynn Road and North Avenue, said Lt. Craig Eldridge of the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company.

Smoke and flames were shooting through the roof of the three-story building and the fire was eventually upgraded to a second alarm, Eldridge said.

The residents of the 24-apartment building were safely evacuated, Eldridge said.

There were no injuries, Eldridge said.

The low water pressure slowed firefighters down but the fire was under control within an hour and completely extinguished at 5 a.m., Eldridge said.

The roof collapsed on 12 apartments, which also sustained heavy smoke and water damage, Eldridge said. The other 12 apartments sustained minimal water damage.

All 24 apartments are uninhabitable due to the utilities being shut off, Eldridge said.

The American Red Cross assisted the 24 displaced families in finding shelter, Eldridge said.

More than 50 firefighters from 14 suburban fire departments assisted in the fire.
