Bus full of inmates stops on Dan Ryan because of fight

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A Cook County sheriff's office bus was forced to pull over on the Dan Ryan Expressway Wednesday afternoon when a group of inmates began fighting.

The bus was returning from the Markham Courthouse when 10 inmates began fighting on the bus about 5:30 p.m., prompting the driver to pull over on the Dan Ryan Expressway (I-90/94) near the Stevenson Expressway (I-55), said Cook County Sheriff's police spokesman Ben Breit.

All the inmates on the bus were chained to their seats and had limited movement, but "a couple punches were thrown," Breit said. One inmate suffered scratches and nobody was hospitalized.

The full bus had taken the 52 inmates onboard to the south suburban courthouse for court hearings earlier in the day, Breit said. The fight happened as the bus was bringing the inmates back to the jail.

The bus pulled over on the side of the expressway and the fight was broken up, Breit said. Chicago Police and Illinois State Police escorted the bus back to the jail.

It was not immediately known what prompted the fight or if charges will be filed.
