Busted! 3 flu shot myths

Have you gotten your flu shot yet?

Fox 2's Deena Centofanti talked with Dr. Matthew Sims from Beaumont Hospital to set the record straight about the three biggest flu shot myths.

Myth #1: "The flu shot will make me sick."

"The flu shot is not a live vaccine; it can't give you the flu. It doesn't have any infectious virus in it. What happens is, people get the flu shot at the height of flu season, they may already be infected by the flu virus. And if they get the shot and then they get the virus, they get the infection, all they know is: I got the shot and I got sick," explains Dr. Sims.

Myth #2:
"I'm healthy. I don't need the shot."

"The flu vaccine is recommended for everybody six months and older. The reason for that is, thousands and thousands of people come down with the flu, and thousands of people in the U.S. die from it every year and a lot of them are healthy," Dr. Sims says.

Myth #3: "The shot isn't safe for me because I'm pregnant or have a compromised immune system."

"Those are people who actually need the vaccine more than anybody, because those are the people who are the most at risk if they do get the flu because their immune system can't help them fight it off as well, and they're more at risk of dying," says Dr. Sims.

Dr. Sims says the vaccine takes two weeks to kick in. High-dose vaccines are available for the elderly and nose-spray vaccines are available at some locations for children.
