`Carrot Dating` app encourages users to bribe for a first date

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

10 years ago, online dating sites were taboo. But now, more and more Americans say they've found Mr. or Mrs. Right by clicking the keys on the computer.

On Monday, an app called Carrot Dating launched--where those looking for love are supposed to bribe their way into a date.

"Well, Carrot Dating is simply bribing somebody to go on a first date with you," Carrot Dating creator Brandon Wade explains. "I think we came up with that name because we were trying to be humorous because when people think of a carrot on a stick they think of a guy on a donkey trying to motivate the donkey to move."

Yep, the website says bribe your way to a first date.

Wade says gone are the days when a nerdy looking guy or gal has to sit at home dateless. Now, the only thing they have to do is sign up for his free app, take a picture, list your vitals like height and weight, and tell other love seekers what you're willing to buy them for a date.

"A tank of gas is quite meaningful...chocolate….we have skydiving or travel and even plastic surgery," says Wade.

Wade says 30,000 people looking for love have already signed up on his app. The list of what you can attain to date someone willing to bribe you is pre-selected. The 25 percent that are willing to buy someone a gift to go out are women.

"At the end of the day it requires that you put something on the table and that's what this app does---it kinda takes dating and turns it into a game," he tells FOX 32.

A game, critics say, that shouldn't be played. They're blasting Carrot Dating because they say it encourages men to woo women with pricey gifts.

Others slam it because they say it's sexist and say it walks a fine line between prostitution or online escorts.

Singles out on the streets of Chicago say online dating maybe popular, but they like meeting their mate the old fashioned way.

"That just seems extremely desperate," one person told our camera. "It's gotta be a better way. I mean, what happened to just going up to her and saying ‘Hey, how you doing? My name is blah-blah. Let's go out sometime.'"

"Yeah, that doesn't seem like a very moral thing to do just bribe a person to go out on a date," another adds. "I feel like if you really want to go out with someone just get off the internet."

The creator of Carrot Dating is the same person who came up with controversial dating sites like SeekingArrangements.com, a site for sugar daddies, and WhatsYourPrice.com, where you bid on dates.
