Robert McKinley says its so bad, his wife won't even go into the backyard anymore. He says the rats come from the sewer and roam in backyards. He believes they nest next door. The city began setting traps in January and continued until last week. But, the homeowner next door demanded they stop.

"She was mad because they made her quit feeding," McKinley says. "She was putting food out for stray cats and the rats were having smorgasbord."

That neighbor was not available for comment. The problem is so bad in St. Clair Shores the city considered a rat bounty program. $5 for every dead rodent brought to public works. The plan was never adopted. McKinley says he uses a pellet gun to kill the rats. He hopes the city will come up with more ideas to solve the problem.
