DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

A man is in critical condition after a burned house collapsed on him. He entered the house, looking for metal to sell, and cut the support beam which caused part of the house to fall on him.

Fire officials say the fire was put out at the home near Modern and Goddard streets around 6:30 a.m. Thursday, and the scrapper entered the home some time after that. Witnesses, possibly other scrappers, called 911. Rescue crews pulled the man out of the rubble and say he did not have any vital signs. Responders performed CPR and were able to find a faint pulse before rushing him to the hospital.

"I understand people need money and they scrap, they do what they do to get the money they need, but it's a tremendous danger to anybody. Whether it's civilians walking by or people scrapping. When you enter these buildings the likelihood of you getting crushed is just too high and it's not worth the risk," says Capt. Anthony Braceful of the Detroit Fire Department.

The man's name has not yet been released but Braceful says he is a male possibly in his 50s.
