CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A 55-year-old Arkansas man was shot to death early Thursday when a trip in an acquaintance's car went horribly awry.

Robert Franklin, of the 1100 block of Denny Street in Blytheville, Ark., was pronounced dead at 4:06 a.m. after his friend rushed him to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital with four gunshot wounds to the back, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

The friend told police the two got lost while driving around during the early morning hours, police said.

When they stopped to ask for directions, a man climbed into their car, pulled out a gun and robbed them, police said.

When the robber exited the car, Franklin, who was sitting in the passenger seat, four times, police said.

The driver of the grey 2002 Chevrolet Impala then drove to Stroger, where Franklin died from his wounds, authorities said.

Police said they do not know where the man was shot, since the driver told them he was lost at the time.

An investigation is underway.
