DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Detroit's chief financial officer has resigned following an investigation into allegations he made racially offensive remarks while in the work place. In a statement Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr said he had accepted the resignation of Jim Bonsall.

He had been suspended with pay while an internal city of Detroit investigation was launched looking into complaints made by demoted finance director Cheryl Johnson. She accused Bonsall of creating a hostile work environment while making inappropriate comments about whether he'd be able to shoot anyone in a hoodie if he took part in the city's annual Angels' Night anti-arson program.

Bonsall later apologized for the remark which he said had been made in jest.

But the apology fell short for many who took offense at the comments for drawing ties to the recent case involving Trayvon Martin, a Florida teen who was walking with his hood up before being involved in an altercation that resulted in his death. Several groups including the National Action Network had demonstrated in Detroit in recent days calling for Bonsall's firing.

In a statement Orr's office said, "Jim has made great improvements in how the city handles his cash and finance operations in the short time he has been here, but it is clear that new leadership is needed to continue to move the City of Detroit forward. I thank Jim for putting the needs of the City and its residents first, and for his dedicated service."

Orr's office says it will conduct a search for a new CFO for the city.
