Church sign in Canton attracts attention

Posted: Updated:
CANTON, Ga. -

A church sign has people talking in Cherokee County.

The message posted outside Hickory Flat Fellowship in Canton, Ga. reads "During the shutdown, can we pray in school?"

A member of the congregation, Linda Gardner, brought the question to the pastor, who then decided to display it for all to see on the highway.

With no deal in sight to end the partial government shutdown, Gardner said she wondered, "If we're not relying on the government, then why can't we rely on God again?"

Gardner said she was surprised to learn that millions of people had viewed the sign on the FOX 5 Facebook page.

Federal law does not ban prayer in public schools, but the law states it cannot be teacher-led and/or mandated. Students can pray to themselves and the Georgia Department of Education says the First Amendment protects students praying out loud.

Gardner doesn't think this sign will change the law preventing teachers from leading prayer, but she hopes the discussion it raises will bring about a different kind of change.

"Faith, hope, love and unity -- all the things that we are missing out on these days," she said.
