It's the freaking weekend, baby! How to have fun AND be healthy
It's the freaking weekend, baby, and you "wanna have you some fun", am I right? Well, good for you! You worked hard this week, and you've earned some rest, relaxation, maybe some twerking, and a little (or a lot!) of party time. Let's kick it, yo!
So maybe, health wise, you have also been "reeeeaalllly good!" this past week, and you really want to go buck wild this weekend, because you deserve it, and it's just the weekend, and WOO HOO, calories don't exist Friday, Saturday or Sunday – nope, not on your watch! (I mean, have you TASTED the buffalo mac ‘n cheese at Rockit?)
:::SIGH::: Alas, my friends, you and I both know that it's not that simple. One of those super annoying truths again. We have all been there; the back-to-back weekends of ridiculous fun and indulgence, and all of a sudden you're like, "Ahh, I need to detox for 3 weeks. Forget you guys. No alcohol, no treats, NO FUN! I'm staying in and resentfully chomping on celery sticks while I watch Law & Order marathons in grungy pajamas ALL WEEKEND". :::POUTING::: (Ok, that's kind of awesome to do sometimes, but YOU DON'T HAVE TO! This is America, people, let's have it all!)
Basic Rules for Wise Weekend Indulgence:
• Enjoy a cheat meal, guilt-free
Not a cheat DAY. Eat protein and veggie meals before going out. Ask for extra carrot sticks and celery sticks when you get delicious wings. Split crazy indulgent and delicious dishes with friends, and savor a handful of bites. Have ½ tsp of cinnamon ASAP after high carb/sugar treats (Proven to slow a rise in blood sugar levels)!!
• Schedule an activity that you will look forward to
Try a crazy, new fitness class with a friend, a bike or run along the lake or in a park, or just go for a brisk walk for an hour or two in a new neighborhood.
• Alternate glasses of water and alcohol
Fine, if you're looking to get a little "cray", have 2 or 3 shots first, and then do this. If you need more than a buzz to hang out with your friends, maybe they kind of suck and you shouldn't be hanging out with them anyway. (And tip your bartender for the water! They will keep it filled!)
• Speaking of alcohol, watch your mixers. No soda, no juice.
Learn to enjoy your spirits with club soda and squeezed limes, or straight-up (carefully!) A favorite of mine lately has been tequila, club soda and squeezed lime. (I recently drank all the tequila in Wrigleyville, but let's not talk about that)
• Ah, beer. Shoot, if you really love it, savor the good stuff, guilt-free.
However, likely 75% of you will feel better and lose some weight if you cut it out. So consider switching to vodka, tequila, wine or hard cider for 2-4 weeks.
So, to be totally correct, yes, your body thrives on routine and you would probably feel and look best if you had a set sleep schedule every day, ate well, and never had more than a couple drinks at a time.
But this is Chicago, and boy, you guys sure like to party, and if that's wrong, I DON'T WANT TO BE RIGHT! Life is short – party on!
