Georgia Tech investigating 'rapebait' email

Posted:
ATLANTA -

A Georgia Tech fraternity has placed itself and one of its members on suspension after a controversial email went viral. The message spelled out instructions for students pledging the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity to use alcohol to lure young women to parties.

The email was sent last month by a fraternity member who has been publicly named. In it, the writer offers instructions for "luring rapebait" by urging pledges to offer alcohol to women and start up a conversation. If the women are "already hammered before midnight," the writer says "skip the chit chat and dance." The writer goes on to say "if anything ever fails, get more alcohol."

While some students told FOX 5 that they believe the email was a joke taken out of context, others found it troublesome.

The fraternity issued a statement saying, "In response to the email, which was authored and distributed by an undergraduate member of the Alpha Rho chapter at Georgia Tech, the chapter has suspended the member in question and placed itself on suspension. An investigation remains ongoing by both the Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity and Georgia Institute of Technology. The chapter is cooperating fully.

The referenced email is extremely inappropriate and does not reflect the values of the Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity, Alpha Rho chapter or Georgia Institute of Technology. The Fraternity takes any activity seriously where its members or chapters are not in line with its commitment to learning, leading and serving. The written expression of this thinking by a member is disturbing to everyone associated with Alpha Rho chapter and the Fraternity.

Currently, Phi Kappa Tau Executive Offices staff, Institute officials, local board of alumni advisors and the regional director are working with chapter leadership to bring this matter to a swift resolution."
