Vote could sell State Fairgrounds land to Magic Johnson

DETROIT (WJBK) -

The Michigan Land Bank Fast Track Authority could vote as early as Wednesday afternoon to sell the 161-acre State Fairgrounds site to Hall of Fame basketball player Earvin "Magic" Johnson and a team of developers.

The cost of the site rings in at $4.6 million. The Southfield real estate firm heading the possible project with Johnson won't confirm any details, but the initial proposal for the property includes a movie theatre, retail stores, housing and lots of parking space - something Kim Tandy doesn't think is best.

Tandy sits on the governor's State Fairground advisory committee, a group made up of people from Detroit's nearby neighborhoods. She says the proposal has some good things to it, but isn't fully convinced yet. She tells Fox 2's Alexis Wiley the space should see more public park and green spaces, and for the already standing buildings to stay there as historical monuments.

"One hundred sixty-one acres of land - we need to get this right because that could be the real boost for the city of Detroit," Tandy says. "The first proposal we were given is just really a sea of parking lot. And to take 161 acres and to put - parking - it just seems like a waste of land.

Tandy and her committee are asking the city to slow down before making a move that could impact the course of the community.
