DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Local groups and residents are rallying Friday, Oct. 4 at 5:30 p.m. to defend the Detroit Institute of Arts and its collection, which could go up for auction to pay off Detroit's creditors.

The Socialist Equality Party and the Wayne State University branch of the International Youth and Students for Social Equality, together with the Committee to Defend the DIA, held a news conference to promote a mass protest to defend the DIA on Friday, Oct. 4. The demonstration begins at 5:30 p.m. along Woodward Avenue in front of the museum.

"The DIA is one of the truly great cultural gems of Detroit," Larry Potter of the Social Equality Party says. He continues: "We are here to say the art at the DIA belongs to the people - not to the rich. We are also here to say, that the art is to be defended. It is the working people and youth who must come to its defense."
