Emanuel calls for stricter menthol cigarettes regulation

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Mayor Rahm Emanuel has called on the Food and Drug Administration to tighten restrictions on -- and potentially ban outright -- the sale of menthol cigarettes and other tobacco products to youth.

In a letter addressed to the FDA, Emanuel said that encouraging young people to not smoke is paramount to helping young people live longer and healthier lives.

"Eliminating the use of menthol cigarettes is a critical step," the letter read.

Emanuel also asked the FDA to consider increasing focus on warning labels on cigarette packs or even banning the products altogether.
