CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

What does this Popeye's Louisiana Kitchen have in common with the Chicago Animal Care and Control more than 50 blocks away?

Vincent Tervel.

The Cook County Jail inmate walked off the job from the animal control building on South Western Avenue near the Stevenson, up Western Avenue to the Popeye's on Addison.

A manager who wanted to keep her name private said, "Just in a regular shirt and he had on boxers and that's all."

The Popeye's manager says Tervel asked to use the phone rather than order food.

"No he didn't order food, he was asking for the phone, yes, for using the phone… Another guy gave it to him but I don't... that's all I see, the police coming and take him," said the manager in an interview with FOX 32's Tisha Lewis.

"The police came and the guy was taken out," said Ramon Hernandez, a Popeye's employee who witnessed the aftermath.

Tervel had been in custody for nine days before he escaped this morning and made the trek to the fried chicken fast food restaurant where he was nabbed hours after going MIA.

The Popeye's is across the street from Lane Tech College Pre High School.

Cook County Sheriff's Office Spokesperson Cara Smith says, "We are investigating the circumstances regarding walking off his assignment and will be seeking charges if anyone was aiding and abetting."

The 36-year-old was in custody after he was accused of stealing copper from gravestones at Rosehill Cemetery.

A FOX 32 News camera crew was greeted by an armed guard at the Animal Care and Control facility, so it remains a mystery how Tervel walked out.
