A soldier from New Jersey was among three Special Forces troops killed in Afghanistan this week, the Department of Defense announced.

Staff Sgt. Timothy R. McGill, 30, of Ramsey, N.J., Staff Sgt. Liam J. Nevins, 32, of Denver, Colo., and Spc. Joshua J. Strickland, 23, of Woodstock, Ga., died Sept. 21, at Forward Operating Base Shank. They had been conducting range training in Gardez, Paktia Province, when an enemy combatant attacked their unit, the Pentagon said.

McGill, who was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group, based in Middletown, R.I., had previously served with the Marine Corps for several years before enlisting in the Army National Guard in 2008.

Among his many awards and decorations are the Army Commendation Medal, Parachutist Badge, Naval Unit Citation, and more.

McGill, a graduate of Ramsey High School, left behind his parents and two sisters, the Army said.

Nevins was assigned to 5th Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group, based in Watkins, Colo.

Strickland was assigned to 1st Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group, based out of Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.
