RECALL: Badger SPF 30 baby, kids sunscreen could have bacteria, fungi

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Badger is recalling about 30,000 4 oz. tubes of SPF 30 Baby Sunscreen Lotion and SPF 30 Kids Sunscreen Lotion because the lotion could be contaminated with bacteria and fungus.

W.S. Badger Co. Inc. is a leading natural and organic sunscreen manufacturer. The company said the products passed testing before they were put on sale.

But routine quality checks showed three microbes: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida parapsilosis and Acremonium fungis. Badger said Acremonium fungis was only found in a sample that had been opened and handled.

  • SPF 30 Baby Sunscreen Lotion tubes with UPC codes of 34084490091 and 634084490114. (Lot #'s 3024A, 3057B, 3063A, 3063B, 3132A, 3133A)
  • SPF 30 Kids Sunscreen Lotion tubes with UPC codes of 634084490145 and 634084490169 ( Lot # 3164A)

Badger said "preservative instability" caused the contamination. CEO Bill Whyte apologized for the problems, and assured the public that toxicologists said the lotions are "unlikely to cause problems except for in immune-compromised persons or for persons with severely damaged skin."

So far, there have been no health problems reported. Badger asks that consumers to report adverse reactions to the sunscreen to the Food and Drug Administration as soon as possible.

But if you have the Badger sunscreen, you should return it to the store or contact New Hampshire company directly at 1-800-603-6100 or email for a refund.

"We are already reformulating all products in question for improved shelf-life stability for next year's sunscreen season," company spokeswoman Deirdre Fitzgerald added.
