CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A number of parents are trying to figure out how to get a 17-year-old honors student out of jail after he brought a gun to school.

Darnell Hamilton has a 4.0 grade point average at Urban College Prep's West Side campus. School officials found a 9 millimeter in a backpack in his locker.

Hamilton told them that he is being harassed by gang members on his way to and from school. He said he only got the gun to protect himself.

Other parents and students say he's a good kid and has no criminal record.

Hamilton is charged with felony gun possession. Bond set at $75,000.
