DETROIT (WJBK) -

A 49-year-old Detroit has confessed to a hit-and-run crash that killed an 8-year-old boy. Meanwhile, family and friends continue to mourn the loss of Darrin Wilhite, affectionately known as "DJ".

"The whole neighborhood loved DJ, " said Darrin's father Calais Kimling. The 8-year-old was riding his bike just down the street from his Detroit home when he was hit near Abington and W. Chicago. A witness told Fox 2 the boy was dragged under the SUV for a block as the driver kept going. His bike was stuck under the vehicle for a mile.

Officers found and impounded a red Ford Explorer last night. The 49-year-old driver turned himself in Wednesday, more than 12 hours after the incident. "Maybe after talking to family members he realized what he did and was remorseful," said Detroit Police Commander Steve Dolunt. The driver is expected to be arraigned on vehicular manslaughter charges Thursday.

Darrin's family members still want answers about this tragedy. "What was going through his mind is what I want to know and why... what was you thinking about, why you couldn't stop," asked Darrin's grandmother Cynthia Monia. "He just got a membership to the Boys and Girls Club like three days ago... and he can't even enjoy his life," said Kimling. The family plans to honor the bright boy at a vigil Thursday. It will be held at the intersection of W. Chicago and Abington from 7pm-8pm.

The family also needs help to give Darrin a proper burial. If you'd like to help, please make a donation to the Darrin Wilhite memorial fund at any 5/3 Bank.
