WOODSTOCK, Ga. -

A soldier from Woodstock was among three U.S. troops killed in an inside attack in Afghanistan, according to the Department of Defense.

U.S. Army Spc. Joshua Strickland, 23, of Woodstock, Ga., was killed on Sept. 21 along with 32-year-old Staff Sgt. Liam J. Nevins, of Denver, Colo., and 30-year-old Staff Sgt. Timothy R. McGill, of Ramsey, N.J.,  when their unit was attacked during range training in Gardez, Paktia Province, Afghanistan.

The soldiers were conducting a firing range training exercise, when according to NATO, an Afghan wearing a security forces uniform turned his weapon on the U.S. soldiers.

Strickland, an Army Green Beret, graduated from Etowah High School before joining the Army in 2008. He was assigned to the First Battalion 1st Special Forces Group out of Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington.

He is survived by a wife, a son and two daughters.
