Bridge lift on Chicago River starts Wednesday morning

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Moveable bridges along the Main and South Branches of the Chicago River will be lifted periodically during the next few weeks, to accommodate boats traveling to their winter storage yards.

"The lifting of Chicago's iconic movable river bridges every fall marks the closing of the boating season," Chicago Department Of Transportation Commissioner Gabe Klein said in a statement.

The bridges are usually raised sequentially and one at a time, according to CDOT. The average bridge lift takes between eight and 12 minutes.

Starting Sept. 25, the 27 bridges will lift in sequence every Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. and every Saturday at 9 a.m., beginning at Lake Shore Drive and ending at the Ashland Avenue Bridge on the South Branch.

The last bridge lift of the season is Nov. 16.
