Kirk: Anti-gang efforts must continue

Posted: Updated:

CHICAGO (AP) -- Sen. Mark Kirk says a shooting that injured 13 people in a Chicago park is another reminder of the work that must be done to eradicate gangs.

In a statement Friday, the Illinois Republican also says the families of the victims of Thursday night's shooting are in his prayers.

Chicago police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said the shooting appears to be gang-related and that it was "a miracle" no one was killed. Among the victims was a 3-year-old boy.

Kirk visited another Chicago neighborhood several weeks ago and talked with residents affected by violence. He says residents spoke about "their everyday suffering at the hands of these drug-fueled gangsters."

Kirk has called for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to assign an anti-gang coordinator to Chicago.
