DETROIT (WJBK) -

Plenty of changes are coming to the Detroit police department.

Police Chief James Craig on Friday named Eric Jones as his new assistant chief effective immediately.

Jones had been an inspector in the department. He will join James White, who also holds the title of assistant chief.

Instead of being in the top ten of most violent (cities), we're going to be in the top ten safest, largest cities," said Jones, who moved from the 9th Precinct to command the Eastern District in February.

In another staffing move, Darwin Roche was named the department's new Community Liaison. His responsibilities will deal with public on a face-to-face level in city neighborhoods, FOX 2's Roop Raj reports.

Kelly Miner, a former FOX 2 staff member, was named the department's Director of Media Relations.
