Former Detroit mayor using leftover campaign money for good

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

Former Detroit mayor Dennis Archer's campaign funds are still being spent. Archer used his remaining campaign funds to start a scholarship after deciding not to seek re-election in 2001.

So far more than $1 million in scholarship funds has gone to more than 200 students from Detroit and Archer's hometown of Cassopolis, MI.

The program has given out more than $100,000 each year since 2001.

Te'Asia Smith, a Senior at Wayne State has received the scholarship each of the last three years. "He [Archer] worked hard, he paid for his own tuition by working a job and he didn't have any help. Now to give back to students like myself, I feel like I need to give back as well," said Smith.

Archer says he was inspired by former mayor Coleman Young - who started his own foundation giving scholarships to children. "If everybody who's in a position can give back, can create opportunities, create jobs, etc. We all give back, we can really turn the city of Detroit around," Archer said.

In addition to campaign funds, the scholarship also receives funding from donations from businesses and individuals.
